Fixed configuration (Pizza Box — T0/T1)

1 rack unit (RU size) contains nothing but Ehternet ports

Pros:

  • Cheap price
  • Small size
  • Light weight
  • Run on normal household power
    Cons:
  • Limited expandability. Backplane is limiteed to 32 or 64 Gbps

Moduler switch chassis (T2)

Big switch with Supervisor card for processing modules.

Pros:

  • Good for expandability (up to 720 Gbps)
  • Support different extension modules, i.e firewall services modules, intrusion detection modules, WAN module,…
  • Provide redundancy because it can work with PDU (Power distribution unit)
    Cons:
  • Heavy, taking a lot of space normally around 20 - 30 RU
